It is widely understood that H. H. Ewers thought of himself as a Satanist. However, there is a fine distinction that must be noted right here at the beginning. There are two types of duality, one where both powers oppose each other (good vs. evil) and one where both forces are drawn together as an act of love and completion (male/ female; yin/yang). Hanns Heinz Ewers shows us the way out of this nightmare. It is by bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness and not reverting back to a point of no awareness at all! What does Ewers have to say on this topic?

“It is solidly established in deepest human nature that all things new and unfamiliar are uncomfortable, while persistence along all accustomed paths brings happiness! That is why fairy tales are of “The Good Old Times”; the favorite songs of every generation sing of the morals and customs of our fathers’ and we find our poetic ideal in “Golden Antiquity”!
That is also why we hear the eternal complaint by the citizen of the “Loss of morals”, especially those morals of his own time, the genuinely coarse, “What is the world coming to?” This is the ancient song of the “decadence” of modern times compared with the glorious past!

Even with the simplest recognition it can be grasped that the path of humanity, despite individual rough spots is constantly leading upward, can be grasped how much higher we stand than our ancestors and even how much higher still our descendants will stand than us!

In the end this steadfast movement again and again overcomes the costly law of human inertia. —

But the past always appears as the victor, as the highest happiness! Back to the earliest beginning of all emotions, back to the point where a living creature had no conscious awareness of itself, could not make the distinction between itself and the exterior world. The achievement of this condition is the final atavism that there is, that which the mystical ecstatic calls, “Merged in God”, yes, to rest in the “Godhead”. It is the final culmination of all wisdom.—

Therefore it is entirely logical that those who hold this condition of ecstasy as the “highest happiness” should not forget that this “highest” is in fact the origin of everything and the deepest of everything, that fairy tales of the “Good Old Times” are the most grandiose as well as the most beautiful lies that humanity knows.

I take a different position—in my book, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, an attempt is made to follow this path of thought to it last particular.”

-Music in Images

Here is a simple statement in his belief that humanity is progressing despite its own intrinsic impulse to revert backwards to old atavisms. Here it seems that he is against this backward return to the base instincts. He takes a different position from that which most people associate with duality! For him, duality is a movement forward, an evolutionary leap, and not a regression.

“Like man himself! In the beginning man was with God and part of the indivisible All, and he tore himself loose in spite of it. From this awareness of self over the course of billions of years there developed an awareness of the contradiction, “I”—and the world! And yet a part of the All clung to this “I”, was still imprisoned in this physical body, grew with it, died with it and was inseparable from its earthly remains.

And a great desire for liberation caused this soul to seek a false path and grope in the shameful darkness. It always ran back by the way which it had come to its original awareness of the “I” instead of to the “Not—I”, and did not know that the goal was at the other end.

The soul was conscious of the contradiction between the “I” and the “Not—I”, but the soul accepted the physical body as part of the “I”, even as the “I” itself did, and did not realize that the physical body was only a part of the “Not—I”. Thus man’s physical body became the unfortunate bridge that always led the soul back to the physical world of which it was a part. And all those souls driven by desire passed over it and descended deeper and deeper until they sank into God.

Yet how comical it was when the pious cried out that one must conquer the body! Their words were so wise, yet their understanding was so wrong. They did not conquer the body—but rather strengthened its power by all they did. They conquered the soul of man and became as beasts; they conquered the beasts inside and became as God.

But the time must come for the striding forth of the liberated human being. When the knowledge becomes so deep and so firmly rooted that each one knows his body is nothing other than some tree that stands in the forest, than some bird that flies in the air: than any foreign object that lies far in the distance! When each passionately feels that his body has nothing in common with his soul—and is as alien to him as a stone in the street , when the assurance reaches each consciousness that the external world may be all-embracing, yet, it fails to hold one thing, namely, the soul—then that great day will dawn—

Then the soul of man will tend the body well, like a temple, like a good house in which one dwells. Only, it will be a stranger, something external from us, and this knowledge alone will be the great conquest of the body. Then the bridge that leads downward will be broken; then the lunacy of our forefathers will perish; then the eternal desires will laugh happily as they kiss freedom and truth amidst their tears over the dark errors of the ages.”

-The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

The false path is the one that runs in shameful darkness, the one that leads back into the physical world. It is even more plainly stated here. This is an affirmation of the soul and of the spirit, a soul and spirit that exist in all things as described below.

“—Things have souls. All of them—just like people, flowers, animals, stones, paintings and books, houses, the table and chairs. They all have a soul—have color and aroma—the stars and the oceans, even nails, umbrellas, rings—waste paper baskets. And it often happens that the souls of these things reveal themselves in their connection with humans. Some chemical attraction brings them to us, a vapor perhaps, an aroma. Or an atmospheric resonance, a harmonic wave motion that radiates from it. There is something.

The thing doesn’t know what it is—no one knows what it is—today. But someday man will know. We will know what it is that attracts one human to another, what creates revulsion or attraction—love or hate. The thing—that man calls the soul.

Or its expression—it’s out flowing. The Indians have called it Shakti for many thousands of years. They give it such high regard that it was thought to be an entity in itself, the one that created everything in the seven worlds. Shiva created nothing, he was the destroyer—everything was created through the divine Durga, the Goddess Shakti.

Was it any different with Jehovah, the great monotheistic God of the Jews? He didn’t go to Mary when he wanted to give a redeemer to the world—he sent his Shakti, his soul, the Holy Spirit.

And the Greeks saw so many souls in things. There were living Shakti in the stars and the winds, in the oceans and the meadows, in the fire, the air, in stones and trees. There were dryads, nymphs, and niads— just like the elves, pixies, fairies and wood elves of Nordic mythology.

Everything was alive—breathing souls were everywhere. That was the visible world. And the great God that destroyed them, the God from Nazareth, the God of everything invisible, did not have the power to entirely exterminate them. The Christian Church did not deny the souls that were in things—it just called them demons. The spirit of evil became—the devil. The colors of the flowers were damned by Saint Hieronymus—as one of Satan’s alluring enticements.”

-Vampire

From this passage we see that Ewers believes in a type of pantheism where souls and spirits inhabit physical things. A high grade of spirituality is seen that moves through all of his writings.

“The Christian sciences stumbled miserably through the centuries in metaphysical lead boots, and were even more pious than the Church. They smashed everything that had life in the outer world and allowed poor humanity to grope around in a dark, deathly cold swamp. They believed that their dominion by slaughter had led them to a great victory when they finally displaced the devil—and held Luther in even higher regard.

Then it occurred to them; that must fall as well—the popular idea now was:
No light without darkness; no “yes” without a “no”; No God was possible without a Devil.
And also, No ‘I’ could exist—without an external world. No soul could exist in the ‘I’ without there being a soul in all other things as well.

Light came once more into the world. Colors grew and resounded. It was believed that souls searched for each other. Sometimes they found each other—but had become like strangers.”

-Vampire

Here we see even more clearly how the forces of duality need each other, work together to create the beauty that is life. They are not eternally at war with each other as described in the “Synagogue of Satan”. What is described is not “good and evil” but “light and dark”.

While little is known about the Antient and Primitive Rite, much is known about Albert Pike’s “Scottish Rite” and it does reflect the union or balance of light and dark in its higher degrees, such as the “Prince of the Sun” degree. These high degrees remind one very much of Aleister Crowley and his statement, “How can something be true if its opposite is not true as well?” In addition both Dion Fortune of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley maintained that the soul must travel both paths, the path of the mystic and the path of magick. The path of the mystic goes up into the spiritual light and the path of the magician goes down into the dark powers of the earth. So once more the question is whether HHE chose a path of duality that was an integration of the light and the dark or one where they were fundamentally opposed.

Perhaps there was a little of both? In the short story “The Death of Baron Jesus Maria von Freidel” the Baron struggles between two personalities that cohabit his body. One is male and the other is female and they are both trying to kill each other. In “Fundvogel” the main character is a female and undergoes a sex change operation to become a male. The idea of having both male and female aspects within the human psyche was very prevalent in Ewers day. Alchemists called it the “Alchemical Marriage” the union of the higher self and the lower self. Carl Jung, an early student of Sigmund Freud developed his theories of the anima and animus. Magicians tried to become hermaphrodites, half male and half female. All of these viewpoints hint at integrating the dual aspects of male and female from a psychological point of view.

“It’s true; the artist has it right. Somehow we live on in our children many generations after our death. As women with emotions and sorrow we carry and give birth under miserable torment but with each birth we rise from the dead and as men later fertilize our great-grandchildren. Then once more blossoms our first thought drawn from a chorus in a distant land and we first become aware of our groping feet and once more cast our wavering seed upon the rocks.

Something lives on and perhaps the best. Many things die- and perhaps the best. Who is to know? Everything dies and what does not die is kept safely in memory. What is forgotten is entirely dead, not that which dies. People are beginning to grasp that it is not the remembering of the past that is good but the forgetting. Remembering is foolishness, an illness, and a disgusting pestilence that chokes out the new life. We do not want to constantly look back in honor of our fathers and mothers but more deeply separate from them because we are more than they are and greater than they are!

We want to tear down yesterday because we know that today we are alive and that our today is a much better one. That is our strong belief and it is so strong that we do not even think about it. We don’t consider that our great today- tomorrow will be a pathetic yesterday only fit for the rubbish heap.

It is an eternal war with eternal defeat if we do not gain victory over our ancestral memories. We are slaves to the ideas of our forefathers. We spend our lives tormenting ourselves in their chains, suffocating in the restrictive fortress that our forefathers have created. We need to build a bigger house. When we are dead it will be worn out as well and our grandchildren will lie in the chains that we have created.

But if that is the truth then what is it that I have now discovered? Am I today at the same time my father, my forefathers and myself? If what my brain carries does not die but lives on in my children and grandchildren how can the eternal revolution ever become reconciled?”
-The Blue Indians

This is a powerful statement and is there any more clear way of saying that we need to look toward the future and not to the past? To destroy existing structures so that new and better ones might be built upon the ashes, this is more than a call to anarchy; it is the sacred call of every new generation and some day our world will become obsolete as well.

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a few days because it is so significant. The end of a great cycle is dominated by science and the male while the beginning of a great cycle is dominated by magic and the female.

The recent news about sexual harassment in the workplace is a good example. Where are the protests? Where is the violence? There are none and there is none! There is simply a universal “This is no longer acceptable!” and that’s it! We are seeing permanent change and its from male dominance to female dominance within our society and it is a good thing! Males have certainly screwed things up enough!

As I type these words I realize I’m not making my point clear enough. We have just finished over 4,000 years of male domination within our society and we are looking at 4,000 years at least of female domination! Does that say it plainly enough? What goes around comes around and this meteoric rise of the feminine demonstrates more clearly than anything else that the old ways are over!

We are looking at a change that is so great it is simply not comprehendible right now. But we will watch in awe as it unfolds. There is no holding it back because it has already been held back far too long.

So what can we expect? What happened at the beginning of the last great cycle? At the beginning of the last great cycle men and women were still living in caves. Dramatic DNA alterations occurred that encouraged human males to stay with human females and form families and communities.

One of these genetic changes was the ability to have sex for pleasure. The human female transformed into a seductive beauty that invited sexual pleasures at all times and not just monthly. Her breasts became more than functional and things of beauty that have fascinated artists up through the centuries. Sex became designed for mutual pleasure as each could face the other for equal stimulation. These evolutionary changes have not happened to other species but remain human specific.

In the early goddess religions the female had the strongest sense of self as the “one who brings life”. Males only held supportive roles.

In today’s modern male dominated world things are changing quickly, more quickly than we can imagine. Male dominance began with the invention of reading and writing and the discovery of the soul or sense of self. Things went from organic to head tripping and the males were so good at head tripping! Women were ridiculed for being able to do what only they could do, conceive and give birth to new life. The males mocked what was once sacred.

Now things are going organic again and we are no longer living in caves! What can we expect?

It is the discovery that the female gives birth to the soul as well as to babies! This is the discovery that will stun the masses. The development of the soul and it’s powers will be a concern of the female and at the discretion of the female. This is the power that today’s female will take up. It’s already happening! Women will no longer allow sexual abuse.

We can reasonably expect some pendulum swing that goes a bit too far, just like it did for the males. Then things will balance out again. Spirituality will be in the caring hands of women and in loving hearts. If you are in balance there is nothing to fear!

Consider Gaia and how she twirls round and round as she travels through space. There is a northern hemisphere and a southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere is magnetic north and the southern hemisphere is magnetic south. They are true opposites, one clockwise and the other counter clockwise; one pushing outward and the other concentrating like an inner vortex pulling things in.

Yet these two opposites which have nothing at all in common are united and in their union they reinforce each other and form the stable structure that supports Gaia and all life upon her!

This is the function of duality; two unite in a third form and create something stable; something both can support with all their power! This is also the dream of male and female and how love can unite them in a third marriage or union that joins their souls together in a joy that transcends life itself.

The Prince of the Sun degree in Scottish Rite Freemasonry teaches this ultimate union of opposites. It is symbolized by the snake swallowing its tail and by the circle. The idea is to recognize the ultimate union of opposites and play both ends against the middle, to gain the desired objective. So we have Democrats and Republicans; both convinced in the rightness of their own cause and the wrongness of the other. We have men and women misunderstanding and hating each other in a war of the sexes.

There is a deliberate effort to keep duality as conflict; duality as good and evil; alive and to eliminate duality as stable union and as strong and stable love between a man and a woman!

Are you getting angry yet? It gets much worse!

Now we can talk about the immortality of the soul and its empowerment; how conscious awareness can stay alive after physical death through the development of a strong sense of self that is not dependent upon the physical body. Psychologically we are talking about the creation of “an observer self”, that part of us that watches our dream self as we dream. Not every one has this; but many could. Strong egos and strong self esteem can be developed in many ways and I’ve written about some of them.

But this too is old news! The creation of the soul and the survival of awareness and consciousness after the death of the physical body have been known for ages. Each religion developed ways of doing this and they are strikingly similar.
But even here we have been played for fools! We have not been taught the need for uniting opposites in love to form a new and greater third; but taught the inevitable conflict and ultimate victory of one opposite over the other! This is the greatest crime that has ever been perpetrated against humanity and has resulted in the loss of many souls and many lives!

The various mystery schools of the East and the West have taught both a “White Path” and a “Red Path”. The “White Path” is essentially the mystical path of the Marriage of Sophia and Christ which culminates in the birth of the observer self or immortal soul, an awareness that can exist beyond the death of the physical body. It creates an astral body out of mental and spiritual energies and involves the denial of the physical body and its pleasures. But it is a true path in that it does involve the union of opposites.

The “Red Path” is essentially a path involving tantric sexuality and the union of opposites to create a “magical body” which can survive after the death of the physical body.

Variations of both the “White Path” and the “Red Path” can be found in Western Alchemy, the Hermetic Tradition, Neoplatonism, mythology, Arab, gnostic and medieval sources as well as the Eastern Religions including Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism.

In all of the above the true paths can be discerned by this balancing of contraries and necessary union of opposites. The false path can be discerned in the inevitable conflict of opposites and the dominion of one over the other. One is the path of love and the other is the path of hate!

We have been played for fools! What are we going to do about it?

Today we are going to talk about the emergence of patriarchy and the male dominated religions. In our search for true Gnosticism and true mysticism it is important to mention that no Gnostic texts predate Christianity. I find that very interesting. What happened during the time period from about 1000 BC to the birth of Christ?

Several things were happening. One of them was the demise of goddess based religions, along with the rise of patriarchal religions, and this was tied in very strongly with the invention of reading and writing.

That was because reading and writing involved an evolutionary leap in human thinking. To understand written words and concepts needed imagination. You needed to be using your brain in an entirely new way because you needed to literally create an imaginary world, a world inside your head that reflected what the words were about.

You couldn’t just look around you and tell what was written down because that’s not how worked. You had to visualize and understand the words in a way that had not existed before. And one of the things that happened during this phase was the development of a sense of self, a sense of ego, by some people. In psychology. we talk about, the Observer self or the watcher.

Not everyone can do this but some people can. This includes me. There is an Observer self and part of me watches another part of me act out a dream and and I’ve even had that Observer self notice other versions of myself! What we are talking about is the evolutionary creation of this watcher or Observer self. It was a very exciting thing that happened because suddenly people began talking about the soul, the immortality of the soul and life and the continuation of awareness after death.

This had never happened before that. Before reading and writing all that people were doing was worshiping the goddess who brought forth life. We died and then we were born again.

Now for the first time they were latching onto this concept of life after death. Life without a physical body! 1900 BC was the time of classic paganism In Greece, pantheism in India and Brahmanism. The first beginning concepts of reincarnation or transmigration of the soul was between 900 and 800 BC.

700 BC to 600 BC the Vedas were completed in India and these are considered some of the earliest religious writings. These writings were believed to be expressions of things that were literally seen or experienced by masters, in other words, there was nothing theoretical about them and they were represented as reality.

We have Buddha around 500 BC, and I might add a note here that the sixth century BC was the high point of human wisdom because during that century we had Confucius, Buddha, Zoroaster, the Jewish prophets in addition to the Greek poets, artists and scientists. All of these things seemed to be happening around that one time and they were all swirling around this concept of reading and writing.

Between 500 BC and 450 BC “Prometheus Bound” was written, and now we are beginning to see a split between the organic Gnostics or true mystics and the rational atheists who believed in logic and reason, and did not believe in life after death, or the spiritual realms at all.

Lastly on this timeline we have the library at Alexandria was destroyed by fire in 47BC, So this time frame. loosely speaking, shows the transition from goddess oriented civilizations to patriarchal civilizations.

Something thats not mentioned very often is that It also represents a shift from religions or spirituality that celebrate life to religions that celebrate death; religions that celebrate the afterlife of the disembodied soul. For the first time the things of the physical world are looked at as simple and unclean.

Instead you begin hearing about the divine feminine, as Sophia and the marriage of the soul with the higher self, This was the point where people started going into their heads instead of their hearts. Everything became spiritual and mental, philosophical, and getting further away from the heart.

What’s important here is that we can actually see where suddenly instead of a celebration of life, religion became a celebration of death.

Zoroastrianism is one of the first religions that involved monotheistic beliefs, the belief in one source supreme source. The Egyptians also under Pharaoh Ahknaton believed in one solar deity as God. Moses got the belief of one God from the Egyptians because he was trained in the Egyptian temples. He was raised by an Egyptian princess as her own son and went to the Egyptian temples during this time in history.

All of these new religions were domnated by males!

The Temple Of One

In the beginning the two groups of alien souls or space brothers and sisters incarnated into physical bodies. They had a strong disadvantage because they did not have a soul connection to Gaia and physical manifesting was not very easy so they allied themselves with the original Gaia inhabitants.

The dynamics of that was interesting because on the one hand there were the rational atheists. They had a strong group soul which they came in with, The other ones, the social enforcers or traditionalists had a strong sense of self and of the immortality of the soul and the spirit world. The spirit worlds were very real for them and the original Gaia inhabitants were just in the beginning stages of developing their own awareness of these things so they were very susceptible to outside influence.

So the native Gaia inhabitants were true organic Gnostics and throughout history, every place you see the hidden teachings of Gnosticism and Tantric sexuality and how they are involved in the development of the soul it refers to them. These things involve love relationships between males and females and the equality of the sexes that goes back to the original inhabitants of Gaia,

Things that go back to the rational atheist point of view are the importance of logic and reason, science and sacrificing of the individual for community and for greater purposes.
The downside is that a machine has no soul and it has no heart and these humans didn’t have a soul and didn’t have a heart in the sense that the original Gaia inhabitants had and so to them the spiritual side of life did not exist. It had no meaning. Everything was mechanical like a machine.

Now the social enforcers or traditionalists knew all about spirituality. They taught the immortality of the soul and how important the heart and the soul was in life, but they were so impassioned by the non-physical realms that they hated physical life and sexuality. They taught to focus on the spiritual and deny the physical side of life.

What they didn’t say is that ultimately the soul and the physical body need each other. That they create a resonant circuit and what else they didn’t say was that the soul by itself, will fade back into nothingness if it does not incarnate back into a physical body to replenish itself.

In both of these two groups there were developed souls that were coming into physical bodies to strengthen and develop their own souls. But they were also working with and in cooperation with the original Gaia inhabitants because the original Gaia inhabitants had the power to draw the fire down from heaven and to physically manifest things. Both groups needed the original Gaia inhabitants abilities to manifest things physically.

It’s important to get an idea of this and how they formed the first mystery schools. I guess you could say the first religion. It was called the Temple of One because everything was in unity. Everything was united and there was a place for each group of humans.

We first see this in the Egyptian Book of the Dead which talks about the three gates that exist for the soul as it transitions from physical life through death and back to some other body. Centuries later we see this reflected once again in the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

The three gates, one for each of these groups and the highest gate, the gate of the individual soul was reserved for the original Gaia inhabitants. The second gate, where the soul upon death was greeted by a Messiah figure or teacher was relegated to the rational atheists. This was a collective because they belonged to a collective soul and that’s where they found their sense of self and would come back from there. The third gate was for the social enforcers or the traditionalists. They found themselves at a doorway or portal where they encountered their reincarnating ego or higher self who directed them to their next body and helped with an overview of the past life.

In the beginning these were all recognized and they were all held together. I first ran across the temple of One when reading about Atlantis. We don’t have any record in the physical world of Atlantis existing and the best we can do is the Minoan civilization of Crete. For all practical purposes, we can say that Crete and the Minoan civilization, represented Atlantis.

It was destroyed by earthquake and flood and in it lived the highest expression of physical life which included the arts, the sciences and the spiritual. It included equality of men and women as well, so there’s nothing wrong with saying that Crete could have been the true island of Atlantis of legend.

And it had the Temple of One. These three groups were able to meet together and live in harmony with each offering their strengths to the others.

But with the destruction of Crete this all changed. We see some of that happening and the survivors going into Egypt. The Egyptian Book of the Dead had some reflections of life similar to what we see in monotheism, Zoroastrianism and other religious concepts,

But basically this is when everything started to fall apart and these two groups which were working in harmony with the original Gaia inhabitants began to work against each other and work against the original Gaia inhabitants.

We see in our modern world how firmly logic and reason and the sciences deny any aspect of the spirit and any aspect of religion.

On the other hand we see how religion and the church has totally denied any importance of physical life, the importance of human sexuality and love relationships. It has focused exclusively or almost exclusively upon the afterlife.

By doing these things both of these groups have tried to disenfranchise the original Gaia inhabitants by feeding them narratives that encourage dependence upon their own group. They have tried to trick the original Gaia inhabitants into turning over their own power to external authorities.

We are going to talk about the connections between literacy and the soul. I mentioned that conscious awareness and life itself really depends upon having both some type of a physical body, along with a nonphysical body or energy body. Together they create what’s called a resonant circuit. Now it’s true that souls can exist without a physical body for quite a bit of time, up to thousands of years. But they will gradually fade back into light unless they find a physical body to strengthen themselves and renew themselves.

I mentioned three types of people that seemed to be emerging around 5000 BC in the same geographical area of the middle east. True mystics are actually original souls that were created along with Gaia or the earth and have evolved with her. I also talked about the appearance of the other two groups which I call rational atheists or the materialists and those I called the false prophets or social enforcers.

Both of these groups represent alien souls or foreign souls that have entered in physical life. They were not originally native here but their alien souls have become born into physical bodies. So their souls are in physical bodies and that’s why their soul characteristics are different than those with native souls.

The true mystics or organic Gnostics are the only original Gaia inhabitants and the only original souls that have evolved here along with Gaia. They’re the only ones with the creative, magical ability that both of the other groups are really dependent upon because they don’t have the organic genetic connection to their own souls. They can’t physically manifest things without the help of the organic Gnostics. So they have enslaved the organic Gnostics to do their work for them.

The souls and genetic connections of the organic Gnostics or true native inhabitants have some of the characteristics of the materialist or the rational atheist souls, because they can also be extremely rational but the rational atheists see only light and dark. Only the physical and material world exists for them and because there is no other nonphysical world for them their spirituality takes the shape of community existence.

They are the hive minded people that I’ve talked about. This collective oriented drive for a harmonious society or human collective becomes what is spiritual for them and what they live for.

In contrast the false prophets or social enforcers are very warlike and they have a deep awareness of the nonphysical astral realities and spiritual planes that they have experienced in the past.

The astral is actually showing the tracks of their past as a traditional destiny that needs to be repeated. So they are traditionalist because history does tend to repeat itself and they’re always trying to find that sacred pattern that repeats and repeats over and over again.

Now for literacy and how important a factor it played in the Paleolithic age of cavemen and women. They were able to create art, They were able to create beautiful art. So there was a process inside humanity that was developing a cognitive ability and that’s just the critical time when the other two groups came in.

These groups of alien souls came in at that time because humanity was at a critical and suggestible stage with individual awareness but not enough to develop their own sense of self. Their own sense of ego was not strong enough to really cut it on their own. So these other two groups of advanced alien souls came in and they had a war going on for who was able to take control of those native inhabitants that were just beginning to develop their own souls.

A soul is the sense of self and sense of ego awareness that dwells in the heart. How literacy comes into play here is how what was once art became hieroglyphics and what was once hieroglyphics became letters. Something happened inside the brains of the humans where they began to visualize inside their heads. They began to creatively visualize and imagine and dream. And once they developed a sense of self, or watcher self, they could actually imagine seeing themselves and see an imagined world inside their heads, inside their minds. That is when they began to think about immortality and life after death or the continuation of awareness after death because of this watcher self.

The watcher self or soul was created as an evolutionary byproduct of the invention of reading and writing. It became solidified inside as the ego, as the sense of self, and when the original Gaia inhabitants dreamed they had the ability of having a watcher self. This was a part of themselves that watched the movie screen of the dream where they might see another version of themselves acting out imagined events.

The mental evolution that created a watcher self or soul for the organic Gnostics didn’t happen to the rational atheists. That group of materialists doesn’t have the ability to develop a watcher self. But what they do have is a very sharp perception of physical reality and they rely almost exclusively upon logic and reason. You will not see them using spiritual concepts or nonphysical concepts because they think that’s a bunch of baloney. What they were really after is logic and reason and the collective mind and the collective good of humanity. That is why they insist that each person sacrifice themselves to the common good because that is what they do.

Now the other group, the traditionalists, the false prophets or social enforcers are warlike. They just want to dominate and they want to enslave the rest of the world. So they are basically trying to create a narrative in which they remain empowered and the natural original earth inhabitants are not empowered. So they are being kind of sneaky about it.

Once more you have this war for control over the souls of the original Gaia inhabitants, the organic Gnostics. Now, previous to this time there wasn’t really any anything going on because everything was goddess oriented, basically the native Gaia inhabitants were guided by the feminine life giving principle. They believed that the goddess brought life through birth and that she brought death and then she turned around and brought life again through rebirth. It was so obvious that they didn’t even doubt it.

But after the invention of reading and writing and after the beginnings of this first sense of self things began to change. This first ego. This first sense of awareness of self was a game changer. The two other groups were very patriarchal and anti-feminine and this was their chance to take control of the evolution of the human race.

This anti-feminine trait is another key characteristic because the original Gaia inhabitants were balanced and had balanced their male and female energy all the way down through the DNA. It was in balance all through their genetics and they were able to integrate their own shadow aspect and higher self.

None of the other groups could and that’s the difference. The organic Gnostics are the only group that can draw fire down from heaven. They are the only true Prometheus’s if you will. That is why they have been so chained and repressed. Like Prometheus they were chained because the rational atheists and social enforcers didn’t dare give them true freedom. It is only now after all these years that the organic Gnostics are taking their own power and their own freedom back into their own hands!

Rafe regarded him gravely a minute before answering. There are not many people claiming sanctuary in the winter. Some of these people have been Apprentice for three or more years. They might remain Apprentice for the rest of their lives if they don’t grow up and train someone. They either have no interest in training or no one wants to train with them. Some people pick a partner to train, fall in lust, become sex partners and don’t care about advancing. Then there are others that want to advance and simply not enough people to train. It is highly competitive and you really have to hustle if you want to advance.

I’ve made some enemies. You’re my sixth trainee in a year. No one else has ever done that before.

Another thing is that I’m younger than most of the people here. Some of the older people really resent me. They not only resent me. They resent the newbies I’ve trained because I’ve taught them to be competitive too. Some of these old timers are finding it almost impossible to get anyone to train. They don’t want to camp out at sanctuary for weeks at a time waiting for someone to show up like I did waiting for you. They are getting older and blaming the people I’ve trained for taking all of the newbies.

There are some hard feelings out there and some day something is going to happen. That’s why you have to be careful. Not everyone here is friendly. Some people would like to see you or me disappear or come up with a broken leg or something. Watch you back brother, watch your back.”

Tobal thrilled at being called ‘brother’ but a chill feeling of dread swirled around his tailbone. What had he gotten himself into, he wondered? The events of last night’s party were hazy and he didn’t remember much. He did remember the initiation though and how powerful it had been. He said as much to Rafe.

“You’ll have plenty of opportunities to participate in other initiations and experience them more completely.” “In fact,” he grinned, “you can have an active part in every circle and initiation from now on if you choose. It is an important part of your spiritual training. That’s how we do it out here.”

As they walked toward the center of the camp Tobal was surprised at how big it was and how many permanent log buildings had been built. This was his first real opportunity to see the camp in daylight. There were permanent structures like the sweat lodge nestled near a clear pool of mountain stream water. Others seemed to be just empty sleeping quarters. The larger log building where they were headed was the galley and stood out from the others.

Teepees were being taken down and put away. It seemed some of the empty buildings were used for storage. The teepee seemed to be the favorite for those desiring a little more privacy. They were built with long poles lashed together at the top and spread out in a conical shape at the bottom. They were covered with the gray woolen material that seemed to be used for just about everything out here. Many were insulated with heavy furs fastened over the woolen material and tied into place. Tobal wondered in an amused way how many trips through the sanctuary building had been made to get that many of the gray blankets.

They were not the only ones getting ready to leave. Many others were already leaving or saying their final good-byes. Tobal was trying to remember the names of people he had met and failing miserably. He felt good though and found himself looking forward to next month when he would see them again. In the galley they had a final breakfast of cooked venison, wild onions and sweet potatoes. With bellies stuffed packs and canteens full, they picked up their walking sticks and headed out of the camp.

They didn’t go back up the cliff but went down further through the valley and into the foothills. Rafe explained that nobody stayed near Heliopolis. His camp was about 40 miles away from sanctuary and there were other camps even further out. Most people stayed no further than thirty to sixty miles from the gathering spot though. Everyone was expected to find plenty of food and game in individual areas that were not over hunted and fairly private. It was mainly a nomadic existence, especially during the training phase. So you followed the food.

At various times of the year animals would migrate and move out of one area entirely and into others. Winters were hard and people set up permanent camps with stored food caches to help survive when fresh food was hard to find. This time of year the weather was mild and the days were warm and beautiful. The snow was rapidly thawing and new shoots of green vegetation ensured they wouldn’t have to worry about adequate food in a few more weeks. There were small animals and new plant life everywhere they looked although it was still too early for any insects.

Shortly after leaving the gathering spot Rafe said, “Give me your map.”

Tobal handed Rafe his map and Rafe marked an “X” on it. “This is my main camp,” he said. “We will be heading there first. That’s where I will show you how I make things and what a permanent camp looks like, especially in the winter. We’ll stay there a week or two while I teach you the basics you will need to know. Then for the last two weeks we will go out and find you some new territory to solo in. Ok?”

Tobal fought a knot of icy fear and managed to nod in agreement. He wasn’t quite certain about how easy this was going to be. Two weeks didn’t seem like very much time at all.

“Ok, then,” said Rafe. “You know where my camp is now so you lead the way!”

Tobal was momentarily confused. Then he understood and took his map back. He studied the spot Rafe had marked and compared it to where the mark for the gathering spot was. He knew they were about ½ mile north of the gathering spot and tried to orient himself on the map. The map showed Rafe’s camp lay about 50 miles in a northeast direction. Damn, he thought, Rafe certainly isn’t one that likes living close to the gathering spot. It would take a hard two days getting to his camp, maybe even longer if the terrain was really rough.

He noticed something else. Rafe was making certain his map had sanctuary, the gathering spot and Rafe’s own permanent camp on it. He felt a warmth of gratitude toward Rafe for that. If anything went wrong he would be able to find help if he needed it.

Tobal sat down with the map trying to puzzle out the best way to get to Rafe’s camp. He noticed that it was in some very rough country which meant it would be at least three days and not two.

“I don’t know if we can get to your place by going in a straight line.”

Rafe grinned evilly, “It looks like 50 miles in a straight line but it’s more like 100 the way we’ve got to go. It’s going to take us almost four days to get there.”

Four days! Tobal suddenly felt very vulnerable and unprotected. How in the world was he supposed to survive in this God forsaken place? He fought a rising panic and looked at the map again more carefully. Four days meant they were going to need water. He noticed a small stream 25 miles away and decided to make that their first camp. It was a little out of the way but he felt it was a good idea to stay close to water.

He studied the map some more and decided the second day they could head straight north and set up a dry camp. The third day would be another dry camp and they would reach Rafe’s camp sometime on the fourth day. They would also reach water on the fourth day before reaching the camp. He explained his plan to Rafe and showed him the map. Rafe studied the map thoughtfully.

“Ya, We can try that.” He said. “You did a good job thinking about what you were going to do and made a plan. You also remembered we need water and that’s very important out here. It looks like a good plan and I’m willing to try it with you. Lead the way.” He said.

Tobal pulled out his cord and undid all the knots in it. He aligned the red line on his compass for a northeast heading and surveyed the landscape seeking the best pathway through it. Choosing his route between trees he set out purposefully with Rafe following cheerfully behind him.

It was rough going the next three days. He didn’t need to worry about water because it rained all the way to Rafe’s camp. Tobal was glad for the makeshift woolen poncho that kept him halfway warm even when it was wet. It was miserable travelling.

He made a hat to keep body heat from escaping out the top of his head. It was welcome protection from both the sun and the rain since Tobal had fair skin that burned easily. Rafe had been insistent he had some type of head covering. One of the quickest ways of loosing body heat was not having your head covered. Sun stroke and sun burn could be dangerous killers. In the wilderness these things were not to be taken lightly. Tobal learned to move carefully and deliberately in the rain and slick mud.

Rafe continued his education by pointing out and gathering herbs. The unceasing rain made the snow disappear almost overnight. He explained about tinder and how to find good dry firewood even in the rain. Tobal learned to always have enough dry tinder and kindling to start a fire. He carried it with him in a pouch on his belt. The pouch was created by cutting some of the fabric off the poncho. He used the sewing kit to sew it together. He also used the sewing kit to mend some of his socks.

He made it a habit to gather small pieces of firewood as they went along so he didn’t need to look so hard for it at night. While it was more weight to carry, it was easier than looking in the rain and darkness for dry wood.

Each evening Tobal would select the campsite and start the fire under Rafe’s supervision. Together they would gather the rest of the evening’s wood and take turns preparing the meal. At night they set snares for small animals. In the morning they would check the snares and sometimes they would be lucky. Often they would find only an empty snare.

They couldn’t get warm enough in the constant drizzle but the fire did feel good even if they couldn’t get dry. During the day they also hunted for small game. Rafe and Tobal each cut a long strip of fabric and made a sling out of it. Together they practiced with small stones at various targets. The first day Rafe hit a rabbit and that night they ate rabbit stew. There was always some kind of greens for a salad.

Small animals were not all they would eat. Rafe showed him how to break open rotten logs and find the grubs within them.

“They are better cooked in something.” Rafe grinned as Tobal fought off a wave of nausea. “Still, they are better than not eating at all. The large wood ants have a lemony flavor but you need to make sure you bite them hard before swallowing or they will try to crawl back up.”

By water they set traps overnight for fish and set snares for small animals. If they caught anything it was usually a rabbit or squirrel and went into the stew or was simply roasted. They ate the fish immediately.

At noon every day Tobal triangulated his true position on the map and made small corrections in their course. At times he rethought the best route to Rafe’s camp from their current position. The wilderness often looked much different than it did on the map and the differences took some getting used to. Some areas that looked passable on the map certainly did not look inviting in real life and other times it seemed appropriate to take a short cut that had not been considered.

In all this Tobal was the guide and Rafe simply listened and followed. Once in awhile he would make a comment about some of the changes in the plan that Tobal proposed but he went along with them. At times Tobal realized he had made a mistake and hours were spent retracing the way back to their starting point. Still, with each success and miscalculation he learned more about both reading the map and moving through rough country.

Late afternoon of the fourth day they arrived at Rafe’s base camp. The rain had stopped but they were soaked to the bone. It was a secluded valley and Rafe had to show Tobal the hidden entrance or he would never have found it. The main camp was a large teepee with several small outbuildings made of logs. He had his own sweat lodge built next to a small mountain stream. There was also a rack for smoking meat and making jerky. The first thing they did was get into some warm dry clothes and fix a decent meal.

The rest of the first week passed quickly. They stayed in the area and set traps for fish and snares for smaller animals. Tobal learned the ways of each animal he hunted. Rafe showed him the game trails and what the individual tracks of each animal looked like. They smoked the fish and other meat so it would keep and not spoil.

In the evenings at the campfire Rafe had him work first on a bow and then on some arrows so he could hunt larger game. He learned how to skin and dress the smaller animals like beaver, muskrat and mink. He would carefully stretch and dry the pelts for later use as winter clothing. He learned the basics of tanning leather and made his first leather crafted items. The weather was turning too warm to be wearing furs anymore and the pelts would soon loose their value as the animals shed their heavy winter fur. He could always use some leather though and concentrated mainly on tanning leather.

Each morning they explored the area, checking game trails and sneaking up on animals without trying to kill them. They had plenty to eat and practiced stalking larger game animals like deer and mountain goat. During the following week Tobal learned more about tracking and how fresh an old track might be. He was getting fairly good with the sling and practiced every day with the bow.

Chapter 7

Later, the High Priestess helped him to his feet and showed him a small bowl of oil and clay goblet of wine sitting on the altar. Moistening a finger in the oil she traced a symbol in the middle of his forehead where his third eye was located.

“I mark you with the triple sign.”

“I consecrate you with oil.”

Dipping her finger in the wine, she again drew a symbol on his forehead.

“I consecrate you with wine.”

“I consecrate you with my lips,” she said lastly and softly kissed him on the lips.

Then she handed Tobal a piece of paper. He recognized the Oath of the Apprentice written upon it.

“Now you must sign the oath you have just taken.”

Tobal signed the paper as everyone cheered and applause erupted all around the circle. Looking around the circle for the first time, Tobal saw fifty or sixty people cheering and waving cups at him in celebration and congratulation. After the applause died down the High Priestess handed him a pair of gray woolen trousers.

“The color gray symbolizes the imperfections that are within each of us. As we strive toward the spiritual life these imperfections become harmless and as we accept them they in turn nourish our souls like the seed is nourished by the dark rich soil of the earth. Our imperfections help us to grow stronger if we use them wisely and learn from our mistakes.”

She handed a sheathed knife and belt to him. “This is your true weapon. It symbolizes the mastery of thought and intent over the material world. As you learn the art of survival in the wilderness you will come to appreciate how important this simple tool can be. It will one day save your life. You will also use this tool in your dreams as your spirit grows stronger and is tested by your personal fears and demons.”

As he buckled the belt and knife around his waist the High Priestess gave him a decorated wine skin filled with mead.

“This is the vessel of the Lady, the Holy Grail of immortality. From this we drink in friendship and in honor of them both. It is the emotional joys and pleasures of human companionship that make life deep and rewarding. It is in sharing our lives with others we find purpose and reward. Life is an eternal celebration and it must be celebrated with others lest we find ourselves alone and unloved.”

“These are the tools of the Apprentice. In the second degree you will learn other mysteries.”

Then taking her own knife in hand she said, “Brother Oak, to learn you must suffer and be purified. Are you willing to suffer in order to learn?”

“Yes,” Tobal answered.
Gripping his right thumb the High Priestess expertly made a small cut. “You signed the oath with a pencil but your Higher Self signs with the blood of your life.”

She took his bleeding thumb and placed it on top of his signature. Then both she and the High Priest placed a drop of their own blood over his saying, “I know you as a beloved brother. Our blood is forever mingled. I will defend and help you according to my Higher conscience and Higher Self to the best of my ability.”

She gazed intently into his eyes, “Look at this oath that you have signed, witnessed by your Higher Self.”

Turning she stepped and threw it into the bonfire. He started as the paper burst furiously into flames. She continued, “As a symbolic act this paper is consumed and purified by the flame of the bonfire until nothing is left but your pure intent. So also in reality may all levels of your being find their true place in the transforming fire of the Lord and Lady that are both found within your own heart. Your commitment and oath is between you and the Lord and Lady. It is not a matter for us. This simple act is a token and symbol of your desire to live in the spiritual light and to be purified in mind, body and spirit.”

“Yet, this is not enough,” she continued.

She took his wine skin and drank from it before offering it to him. “Truly the powers of your higher self flow ever into your being and if you are open to the process your life will be changed forever. Let the chalice of your soul freely receive the wine of your spirit and experience divine intoxication thereby.”

At her gesture Tobal lifted the wine skin and drank the mead. It seemed to glow in the fire light as if it were full of some vital energy that had a life of it’s own. He felt the warmth and energy spread through him warmly bursting with energy and love. As the golden fluid poured down his throat into his stomach he could feel the warmth grow until he was standing in a large ball of energy and spiritual light.

Then the High Priest and High Priestess both placed their hands on his head invoking the highest power of the Lord and Lady. The energy poured into him sealing his initiation forever.

The High Priestess said, “I now salute you in the name of the Lord and Lady.” Turning, she led him to each of the four smaller fires at each quarter of the circle and proclaimed loudly at each station.

“Brother Oak has been consecrated Apprentice of our ancient craft and is become a Child of the Lord and Lady.”

As she finished the entire circle came forward in a wild celebration and swept over Tobal. The party had begun.

“Hey, get up! Get up!”

Someone was pushing and shaking Tobal. Groggily he raised his head. It was Rafe shaking him and grinning mischievously. “Hey, c’mon. We’ve got a lot to do today. You going to sleep all morning?”

Tobal groaned and put his hands to his head. He had a splitting headache and a nasty hangover feeling in his gut. Must have had too much of the mead and home brewed beer last night he thought morosely. He rolled over and tried going back to sleep but Rafe was shaking him again cheerfully.

“C’mon, I’m not kidding. It’s a busy day. Let’s go get some breakfast.”

Tobal sat up and looked around realizing he had been sleeping in one of the teepees he had seen yesterday. He didn’t have any idea how he had gotten there. There were empty blankets where other people must have slept but they were all gone. He was the only one left.Sitting up he looked bleary eyed at Rafe.

“What are we doing today?” He tried valiantly to ignore the throbbing in his head and the churning in his gut.

Rafe gave him another light hearted, good natured poke with an elbow. “How does it feel to be a witch?” He asked cheerfully. “Perhaps I should say an Apprentice witch.” He chuckled.

An Apprentice witch?” Tobal mumbled. “I didn’t know I was going to become an apprentice witch! What the hell are you talking about anyway?”

Rafe hunkered down on his haunches, “I keep forgetting your parents are dead,” he said. “I can’t believe all of this is completely new to you. Most of us have grown up within the system and understand it.”

“Well I don’t,” grumped Tobal. “Maybe you can fill me in on what I’m getting myself into here.”

“There are three separate degrees in our system,” Rafe told him. “These three degrees correspond to the three degrees of the ancient mystery schools, the three degrees of ancient Freemasonry and the three degrees of witchcraft. We simply call it the three degrees of the Craft.”

“The first degree of Apprentice is concerned with learning the basic survival skills that will keep you alive in the woods during all seasons of the year. We are given gray tunics and trousers…by the way.” He grinned. “How do you like your new trousers?”

Tobal flushed and grinned back, “They are pretty nice actually. It was getting kind of drafty after they shortened my robe.”

Rafe snickered, “Well anyway, the color gray symbolizes the degree we are in. The second degree is black. You probably noticed your guards last night were wearing black?”

Tobal grinned. He was starting to feel much better. “They were pretty rough too, but my guide was nice looking, that dark haired girl?”

Rafe ignored him, “That’s part of the Journeyman degree. The Journeyman degree is where you learn self-defense among other things. “ Rafe looked at him quizzically, “Do you remember how you have to train six other people to solo before you can enter the Journeyman degree?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, to complete the Journeyman degree you need to beat six other people in hand to hand combat. That doesn’t mean how many times you get beat yourself,” he grinned ruefully.

He looked a little worried and Tobal couldn’t help but think Rafe was a bit anxious about becoming a Journeyman. That was probably due to his small size. It was hard to think Rafe could beat anyone in a fair fight.

“What about the third degree then? What’s that degree about?” he asked curiously. “Are they the ones dressed in red tunics and robes?”

“Yes, they are dressed in red.” They are titled Master of the circle and accorded the highest respect. You never know when your life is going to be in their hands. Their obligation is to serve as emergency medics and to officiate during circle and initiations. They monitor the health and well being of everyone. You will see them riding around on their air sleds. They monitor our med-alert bracelets and are instantly alerted if our vital signs change through injury.”

He held up his silver bracelet to show Tobal. “If something ever goes wrong and we are badly hurt our wrist alarms go off and it is the third degree Masters that give us the medical attention we need. Sometimes they are too late or nothing can be done. Other times they will take us to sanctuary or the hospital for serious injury or illness. Basically they keep tabs on everyone and make sure we are healthy and doing all right. They serve as medics for three years. After three years of medical service they are accepted as citizens into Heliopolis.”

“Three years!” Tobal blurted. “It will take forever to become a citizen!”

Rafe shook him hard and looked seriously into his eyes. “Don’t even think about becoming a citizen,” he warned. “Focus on learning and living right now in the present moment. Get this right or you will not live to become a citizen.”

Tobal found his pack and carried it silently thinking about what Rafe had just told him as they went off to find some breakfast.

The second day of circle was pleasant. Rafe introduced him to many friendly people he instinctively felt comfortable with. Tobal wondered how many of these new friends Rafe had personally trained and helped solo. He noticed Rafe was well liked by many circle members. Even more interesting was a certain section of the circle that seemed to really dislike Rafe. Tobal wondered why.

This small group went out of their way to be disagreeable to Rafe and to him. After one roughly pushed past him Tobal asked Rafe about it.

“What’s with those jerks anyway?” He asked.

No one came for him as he sat meditating and watching the moon rise. He guessed it must be around midnight and the moon was full and bright. The sky was very clear and the stars were brilliant. Then he saw a black robe coming toward him in the moonlight with a torch. As the figure neared, Tobal saw it was a dark haired girl. Feeling a little self conscious, he scrambled to his feet and steadied himself.

She stopped in front of him holding the burning torch in his face. “You are a lost and lonely soul wandering in the darkness and searching for light. Without wisdom you are wandering blindly and doing harm to yourself. If you wish, I will act as your guide. Do you seek the light and wisdom of our clan?”

Tobal answered, “Yes, I do.”

“There are two passwords you must remember or you will not be allowed into our sacred circle.” She slowly whispered, “Perfect Love” and “Perfect Trust” into his ear. “Can you remember these two passwords?”

Tobal nodded in silence.

“You must speak, Yes or No,” she demanded shoving the torch at him fiercely.

“Yes, I can remember them,” he stammered backing away from the fire.

“Come with me, but first I must blindfold you.” She took a strip of gray cloth and bound it tightly across his eyes so he couldn’t see anything.

She led him stumbling in the darkness toward the central fire he had seen in the distance. As they neared he could feel it’s heat and hear the flames crackle. He could also hear the muffled stirrings of other people as they hushed to watch and listen. Another female voice spoke loudly from the center of the circle.

“Listen to the words of the Lord and Lady. Whenever you need something call upon us, the guiding spirits of the human race, male and female. We shall answer you and assist you in all things. You are meant to be free, to dance, to sing, to feast and to make love. Do these things all with our blessings for the “Blessings” of physical life and the “Blessings” of spiritual life are as one within each human heart.

Embrace your dreams and desires as you strive to make them real. Let nothing stop you or turn you aside. Accept our blessings and help because life is meant to be a joy of the heart. We, male and female, can be found within the dust of the earth and the light of the stars. Our awareness encircles the universe and binds it to our wills. In our union is the beauty of the green earth and the white moon among the stars, the mystery of the waters and the desires of the heart of man. We call upon your soul to join us in the creation of nature and the expansion of the life force into the universe.

From the union of male and female all things must come and all things must return. Rejoice therefore in the duality of life and let your worship be acts of love and pleasure, beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence. Know that we are within you, male and female, and if you can not find our union within yourself, you will never find it within another person. We will be with you at your death even as we were with you at the moment of your birth.”

In the pause that followed Tobal’s guide stepped forward and said loudly, “A seeker is among us. Tobal Kane has claimed sanctuary. He wishes to join with us and follow the ways of the ancient craft.”

The High Priestess called out, “This is not a matter to be taken lightly. Your immortal soul will be deeply committed to the path of the Lord and Lady if you continue. Do you wish to join your destiny to that of the Lord and Lady?”

Tobal spoke out firmly, “I do.”

The High Priestess came up to him and placed her hands on his shoulders, “Know well that love and trust must be freely given so they may be freely received. Consider carefully your own words because your life’s blood may someday be required. Do you still desire to join your destiny with ours?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Very well, in following the way that stretches beyond life and death will you serve the Lady and reverence the Lord? Will you keep secret from the untrustworthy those things we will show you?”

“Yes, I will.”

“Have you chosen a name by which you will be known within the circle?”

“I have chosen ‘Brother Oak’ as my magickal name.”

“So be it brother Oak, enter the path of light.”

Tobal was pulled forward into the circle but his guide sharply pulled him back.

“Brother Oak, You cant’ enter our sacred circle unpurified.”

Tobal waited, wondering what was going on. He felt water being sprinkled over him.

“I purify you with water.”

He suddenly smelled incense very strongly.

“I purify you with fire.”

The High Priestess continued, “Know this, you will not be asked to go against the inner voice of your conscience or against your higher soul by taking the oath of our sacred circle.” He felt the sharp point of a knife blade pressing painfully into his chest.

“It would be better to rush upon this blade than continue with fear in your heart. There are two passwords that will allow you entrance into our circle. What are they?”

Tobal whispered, “Perfect Love” and “Perfect Trust.”

The High Priestess smiled, “These are most welcome within our circle. I give you another.” She embraced Tobal and kissed him, her body pressed tightly against his. With her body she turned him around and pushed him into the circle. Then she led him stumbling clockwise around the fire coming to a sudden stop.

“Powers of the East. Brother Oak is properly prepared for initiation as Apprentice into our ancient craft.” He was led further and stopped again at another point. “Powers of the South. Brother Oak is properly prepared for initiation as Apprentice into our ancient craft.”

This was repeated two more times, once at the West and once at the North. Then she led him back near the center of the circle where he felt the heat from the bon fire against the front of his body. “You are about to be recognized as an Apprentice of our clan and circle. As an Apprentice you are expected to gain the skills to survive on your own in the wilderness. You are expected to take care of your own belongings and eventually set up your own household.

You are expected to solo for one month to prove your mastery of survival skills. Following that”, she continued, “you are expected to train six others even as you will be trained. You must do these things before you are allowed to progress into the 2nd degree of our ancient and holy craft. Do you understand this? Do you agree to do these things to the best of your ability?”

“I do,” said Tobal.

“In agreeing to these obligations you have passed the test required and may now take the Oath of our circle. Are you ready to continue?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Will you always help, defend and protect brothers and sister of our clan from harm?”

“I will.”

“Then repeat after me, I, Brother Oak, in the presence of the Lord and Lady, most solemnly swear I will keep the secrets of our clan. I will never refuse to share these secrets with a brother or sister if they have been initiated as I was. I further swear I will not loose control of my thoughts, words, or actions. I will not use my powers for evil purposes and I will proceed with firmness and courage to the conclusion of this initiation. I will let my inner conscience and higher self guide me in all ways. I further swear by my hopes of a future life, mindful that my measure will be taken. May my weapons be turned against me if I break this solemn oath. So help me, Lord and Lady and my own Higher Soul.”

“Now we are going to take your measure.”

Tobal felt the High Priestess and someone else stretch a cord from the top of his head to the ground and heard them cut it. Then the string was placed around his forehead and a knot tied as the measure was taken. Next he was asked to raise his arms and the string was placed around his heart where another measurement was taken and another knot tied in the cord. Lastly he felt the cord around his hips and genital area where a final measurement was taken.

The High Priestess wound up the string and placed it on an altar that stood near the fire. “Before you are sworn, are you willing to pass the ordeal?”

“I am willing,” Tobal answered.

A drum began to sound and he could hear the outer circle come alive as members began to dance and move around the circle. They gently pushed and nudged Tobal as they passed turning him until he was giddy and completely disoriented. This seemed to go on forever as a feeling of stuffiness, energy and heat within the circle became overpowering until the cone of power was raised. Tobal felt like he was about to faint.

Abruptly the High Priestess called a halt and turned Tobal back to face the bonfire.

“If you seek the light, you shall find it!” She shouted snatching the blind fold from his eyes.

He was momentarily blinded and couldn’t see.

“This bonfire is the symbol of the triumph of truth and wisdom. The light it gives is symbolic of the greater spiritual light you now seek.” Placing her hand on his head, she intoned, “In the name of the Lord and Lady, I transmit this blessing of love and light to stir your higher self and bring you into the light.”

A tingling and pouring of light and energy flowed through Tobal. It was so powerful he felt dizzy and happy at the same time.

The High Priest came up next placing his hand on Tobal’s head. “In the name of the Lord and Lady, I transmit this blessing of love and light to stir your higher self and bring you into the light.”

Again Tobal felt the tingling as a wave of energy swept through him. It was a different type of energy but just as powerful as the first. They felt different but somehow they also felt like they belonged together.

He felt himself being torn from his body and pulled into a vortex of energy that swirled him upward to be embraced in the arms of a man and woman of radiant light. This must be the Lord and Lady, he remembered thinking before he collapsed.
